Below is our no‑nonsense guide to staying safe when working with filament, especially carbon‑fibre blends and other materials that release fumes or fine particles.
Gear Up: Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Carbon‑fibre filaments are incredible for strength and stiffness, but they produce tiny fibres you don’t want in your eyes, lungs, or skin. Before you fire up the printer, suit up with:
- Safety glasses. Protect your eyes from stray fibres and dust.
- Dust mask or respirator. Helps prevent inhalation of fine carbon particles.
- Gloves. Keeps carbon fibres off your hands.
- Long sleeves. Reduces skin exposure and irritation.
Printing tough shouldn’t mean breathing tough.
Ventilation Matters: Keep the Air Moving
Materials like ABS, ASA, PC‑ABS, and other engineering plastics can release fumes during printing. To keep your workspace safe:
- Print in a well‑ventilated area
- Use an air purifier if possible
- Open windows or improve airflow around your printer enclosure
Good ventilation isn’t optional, it’s essential.
Handling Carbon Fibre: Respect the Material
Carbon fibres are similar in size to glass fibre and asbestos. While they’re generally considered less hazardous, they still deserve caution.
To minimise exposure:
- Handle carbon‑fibre prints gently
- Seal finished parts with a clear coat to lock in loose fibres
- Clean up dust with a damp cloth rather than blowing it into the air
Strong materials deserve strong safety habits.
Extra Safety Tips from the Workshop
- Clean your printer regularly. Dust, fibres, and debris build up fast.
- Avoid touching your face while handling filament or sanding prints.
- Store filament properly. Keep spools in airtight containers to prevent moisture absorption and maintain print quality.

Bed Adhesion Solutions
Filaform Bed Adhesive Spray is a powerful solution for improving 3D print bed adhesion, especially with high-temperature materials.
Regular Strength: Great for everyday use, helping prevent warping and ensuring smooth first-layer adhesion.
Extra Strength: Designed for demanding prints and high-temp filaments like PETG, ABS, nylon, PC, and carbon fiber blends. It holds parts securely during printing and releases them easily once the bed cools.
Note: Not recommended for ASA filament with a smooth plate, as it may cause the bed surface to peel during part removal.
Both formulas work well on smooth and textured PEI beds and are easy to apply just spray, dry, and print. Say goodbye to failed prints and hello to consistent, high-quality results.
